The Polwarth sheep is a breed which is three quarter Merino an one quarter Lincoln. This wool is Merino soft, but is a bit more sturdy due to the longwool characteristics of the Lincoln wool. It is definitely next-to-skin soft with no scratch-factor and is therefor really lovely for baby items. It is a lovely bouncy yarn. It has a sport weight yardage, but can be knitted (or crocheted) with either a tight sport weight gauge (for warm mittens, hats etc.) or at a DK-weight gauge for a less dense fabric, which is perfect for sweaters etc.
This yarn isn't superwash treated, therefor it has better insulating properties than superwashed yarns and is warmer, but be aware that this yarn can felt if not washed carefully.
I've knit myself a cabled headband and a cowl and a sweater for my son with this yarn and highly recommend it and I can't wait to start a sweater for myself with this base soon! :)
